Paul williams architect houses9/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But none do quite what this book does: offer an extensive biography by exploring the rarely seen, early domestic projects that put Williams on his trajectory to becoming the greatest Black architect of the 20th century. There is no shortage of evidence as to Williams’s remarkable life, his struggles with prejudice, and his unquantifiable triumphs. Recently, the USC School of Architecture and Getty Research Institute announced the joint acquisition of his archives and their plans to digitize and preserve the treasure trove of American architectural history. Many projects are in place to renovate, restore, or extend his legacy. There is an entire episode on him for the Lost LA television series by PBS. Other pieces praise him for breaking barriers of the color line in the American Institute of Architects. There are numerous accounts of tactics he developed such as sketching upside down to accommodate his white clients and spare them the impropriety of standing shoulder to shoulder with a Black man. She would continue to live in the house until her own death.In building his legacy, Williams’s race surely created many obstacles. After the Senator died suddenly at sea during a round-the-world cruise, his wife Katherine commissioned Paul Williams to design this smaller version of the original residence in 1929. In 1914, Frank Flint commissioned and had built a personal residence in his favorite architectural style: a romanticized vision of a southern governor's mansion. (Personal communication, Tim Gregory.October, 2013) Today a "significant" number of the architect's Flintridge projects remain unidentified and Tim Gregory, a noted regional architectural historian, fears many have been demolished. At least ten of his designs were either model homes or spec projects commissioned by Flint. When Flint began planning the 1,500-acre residential aspect of Flintridge, he decided to give the young architect, Paul R. Not a man of modest dreams, his plans for "the Switzerland of America" included an upscale hotel, country club, and an equestrian center. Flint hoped his new development would eventually become a part of Pasadena. At that time a Pasadena address was one of the most prestigious in Southern California. One of the initial projects of the company was creating a wealthy suburb near Pasadena. In 1915 Flint became president of the Los Angeles Investment Co., one of the largest land development companies in the area. ![]() Senator and was recognized as "a leader in many national and California affairs." ( Los Angeles Times. One person who regularly bought a paper and remembered Willliams was Frank Putnam Flint. Williams sold newspapers at the corner of First and Spring, and even at this age was recognized as a quietly confident young man.
